Celebrate Fall Vehicle Care Month this October by following these seven general maintenance tips. Stop by Ed Hicks Nissan for maintenance and repair services.

October is Fall Car Care Month, which means it’s the perfect time to give your vehicle some much-needed TLC. While we may not need to worry about plummeting temperatures here in the Coastal Bend area, that doesn’t mean you can’t use October as a chance to perform some essential vehicle maintenance tasks. Keep reading to learn why maintenance is important and discover tips for what you should tackle this fall.

Why Vehicle Maintenance Is Important

Life is full of repetitive tasks like laundry, grocery shopping, and even tire rotations. Taking your Nissan to your local Corpus Christi service center might not be your idea of a fun time, but vehicle maintenance is crucial for helping your Nissan stay in top shape. Regular maintenance can help extend the life of your vehicle’s parts and systems, and you can catch problems early on before they become extensive repairs.

7 Fall Car Care Tips

The sweltering days of summer are behind us, and the slightly less hot days of fall are here. Help your care prepare for the new season with these maintenance tasks.

1. Inspect Your Tires

Whether you’ve been commuting to work or overlanding across South Texas, your Nissan might have covered a lot of miles this summer. Take some time to inspect your tires and make sure they’re still in good condition. Check that the tread is above 2/32 of an inch and look for visible signs of damage like cracks, punctures, or bulging. If your tires are damaged or the tread is too low, you’ll need to get a new set.

Don’t forget to check your air pressure and give your tires some air if it’s low.

2. Check the Fluids

Your Nissan relies on multiple fluids to run as intended. Look under the hood to check your oil and coolant, brake fluid, and power steering fluid. After the heat of summer, making sure you have enough coolant is especially important.

3. Have Your Brakes Inspected

You already know how crucial your brakes are. Generally, you should have your brakes inspected at least twice a year, so fall is the perfect time to handle this critical maintenance task. You want to ensure your brake rotors and pads are still in good condition and performing as they should.

4. Change Your Windshield Wipers & Top Off Washer Fluid

From beach sand to Saharan dust, you’ve likely been putting your windshield wipers and washer system to work over the past few months. Check your washer fluid and give it a top-off if it’s low. Also, inspect your windshield wipers and replace them if necessary. Look for cracking and check that they don’t screech when in use. Make sure your wipers cleanly wipe away debris without leaving streaks or a lot of residue behind.

5. Confirm Your Lights Work

Fall and winter mean it stays dark longer in the mornings and gets dark earlier in the evenings. Your headlights and tail lights are about to be put to more use, so checking that these lights are working is a must. Grab a friend or family member to help make sure all exterior lights, including brake and reverse lights, work. Promptly replace any bulbs that have gone out.

6. Test Your Battery

The heat of summer strains your battery, and fall is a great time to check that it still has enough juice. Visit your local service center for a battery test, and visually inspect your battery for signs of corrosion.

7. Check Your Car’s HVAC System

Your A/C has been working hard all summer, so you want to check that the system is still in peak condition. The last thing you want is for warmer temps to roll around, only to discover that the past summer has killed your air conditioning. While you’re at it, check the heater, too. We might not get the coldest temps here in South Texas, but you never know when you might want some extra warmth on those cooler mornings.
